If you get your CBT at 16 you can upgrade to a limited 50cc bike at 17. At 19 you can upgrade to an A1 license that permits you to ride a 125cc bicycle without plates or L plates and to carry the passenger.

The A2 is the next step. You can either upgrade from an A1 or take a direct access theory and practical test.

A1 Licence

The open road, wind in your hair, and the excitement that comes from riding the motorbike. There's nothing quite like it, but before you can enjoy the freedom that comes with it there's a vital first step to make to obtain your A1 license.

The A1 is the first step on the bike licensing ladder. It permits you to ride motorcycles and mopeds that are 125cc or larger and has a a maximum power output of 11kW. It is available at 17 years old and is a great option for those who want to begin their motorbike journey in a more accessible way.

To get an A1 license, you'll be required to complete the Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) and pass both a theoretical and two-part practical test. The CBT course offers essential motorcycle training, and helps prepare you for the practical and theory tests. To pass your A1 test, you'll need to be accompanied by an instructor who is certified in motorcycles. The test should take about 20 minutes, and will consist of two modules. Module 1 is conducted at the training center and focuses on off-road maneuvers like controlled stop, a slalom and a figure eight. The remainder of the test will be performed on the road and will concentrate on the way you control a motorbike while it is moving at high speed.

Module 2 will be focused on riding a motorbike in traffic and managing intersections. You will also be tested on your ability to follow road signs, and comprehend and apply road laws. You will be asked to demonstrate your ability at low speeds and to perform slow control exercises, like turning left and riding up and down hill, or turning right and then making a U-turn.

After you have completed your A1 license, you will be eligible to upgrade to the A2 license by passing your CBT Theory, CBT and Practical Tests. You will then be able to operate any A2 category bike and be able to carry passengers.

A2 Licence

The A2 Licence represents the second step in obtaining a complete motorcycle licence. The A2 licence is obtainable at the age of 19 years old with a valid CBT course. It is a limited version of the full motorcycle licence. The A2 license permits you to ride on motorbikes with a maximum power of 47 BHP. However, bikes that exceed this power can only be used for 94 BHP.

If you decide to go down the A2 route, you'll be required to be able to pass Module 1 and Module 2 of your motorcycle test. Both tests can be booked through the same location that you book your CBT course or theory test. The A2 route is ideal for riders who have completed their CBT course quickly and are now ready financially and terms of experience to upgrade to a larger motorcycle.

The first module of your A2 motorcycle test is a park-based session where you will learn to control the bike, including slow speed manoeuvring and emergency stoppages. You will then take the road portion of the test. In this section, you'll need to demonstrate hazard-avoidance and road positioning. You will also have to perform life-saving checks and keep a two-second distance from the vehicle in front of you. You could make minor errors up to a total of 10 faults. This can include not using your mirrors and not maintaining an appropriate distance.

After passing both parts of the A2 motorcycle test you can ride any motorcycle that is in the A2 category. This includes the popular Honda CB500F or Yamaha MT-07 model. While they aren't particularly powerful but they are capable of navigating the speed limits and offer a comfortable, enjoyable ride.

A3 Licence

The A2 Licence is a natural advancement from the CBT and lets riders advance to larger bikes that have more power. The A2 Licence comes with extra benefits that aren't available with the CBT. For instance you can ride on motorways or carry passengers. You can make the leap from CBT to A2 by taking additional training and passing the relevant practical exams. The A2 licence is valid for two years and may be upgraded to a full, unrestricted A licence after two years.

The first step in getting your A2 license is to be able to pass the Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) and Motorcycle Theory Test. After you have completed these requirements, you will be able to take the Module 1 and Module 2 practical tests. The module 1 test will test your riding abilities on a closed-circuit, while the module 2 test requires manoeuvres in an open road.

You must be able show good observation skills during the A2 practical test and anticipate road dangers. You should also be able to utilize the correct road positioning and perform controlled maneuvers. For instance, you need to be able to make a U-turn and execute a figure of eight. You should also be able to control the bike in slow-speed situations such as turning at junctions and responding to traffic signals.

After passing your A2 test, you can start working towards the full A licence. This can be achieved by following the progressive access route or taking a direct entry test. To be able to take direct entry you must pass the theory test, and then pass the mod 1 and module 2 practice tests on a bicycle that is at 54bhp or more.

The A1 and A2 licences are different from the rest of the motorbike licenses because they are governed by the power-to-weight ratio not engine cc's. This means that even some 600cc bikes are A2 compliant, especially if they have restrictor kits fitted. It is important to remember that not all bikes that claim to be A2 compliant are actually A2 compliant. Do some research before purchasing one.

A4 Licence

The A4 Licence allows drivers to drive vehicles with four wheels or more. This license includes buses, trucks, and coaches. It also covers vehicles that transport dangerous items. Drivers must pass a criminal record test to be able to get the licence. The Digital Driving Licence displays important details, including the date of issuance as well as classes of vehicles that the motorist is certified to drive.

To get an A1 to A4 license the driver must attend a driving school or local transportation office. They also more info must pass a physical test. The training course lasts approximately 5 hours (1 day) and includes lectures on driving etiquettes, defensive driving and other related laws.
